Year-end review + goals.

The personal end-of-year workflow. Three steps: honest retrospective, 3 goals, first action.

CADENCE · ANNUAL · 2 HOURS

Year-end reviews usually generate goals nobody pursues. The failure mode is being too general ('be healthier') or too many ('here are 12 things'). This workflow forces honest retrospection, 3-goals-only discipline, and a specific first action within a week. Personal reflection tool; adaptable for professional review.

STEP 01

Honest retrospective

Goal: Read the year for what actually happened, not the highlight reel.

THE PROMPT

Personal year retrospective. Here's what happened this year: [paste calendar summary, journals, photos, whatever raw material]. Give me an honest read: what were the top 3 things that went well (specific, not 'I grew as a person'), top 3 that went poorly, and the pattern I'd rather not admit. Don't be encouraging; be accurate.

STEP 02

Three goals — no more

Goal: 3 goals with specific end-of-year outcomes; no 4th goal allowed.

THE PROMPT

Given the retrospective, draft 3 goals for next year. Each must have: (1) a specific outcome by end of next year (measurable or bindingly-observable), (2) why it matters more than other options, (3) what I'll deliberately NOT do to make room for it. No 4th goal. Cutting is more important than including.

STEP 03

First action this week

Goal: One specific thing done by end of the coming week.

THE PROMPT

For the 3 goals above: what's the ONE action I do this coming week that moves at least one goal forward? Not 'start thinking about' — a discrete action with a specific outcome by Sunday.

THE COMPOUNDING PART

Repeatability, not cleverness.

HANDOFFS

What lives where when the workflow finishes.

Save the year-end doc. Read it monthly. At mid-year, do a shorter version — 3 questions: which goal is on track, which is off, what's one action for the second half.

VARIATIONS

The same shape, different jobs.

  • Quarterly version: same 3-step structure at quarterly cadence for people who prefer shorter horizons.
  • Professional review version: same structure applied to work/career specifically, without the personal-pattern step.

Try this workflow once. Then decide if it earns a recurring slot.

The value compounds after the third run, not the first.
