WORKFLOW · FOUNDER · 25 MIN

Investor update draft.

Turn a month of scattered wins/challenges into a clean investor update. Three prompts, 25 minutes, edit for voice and send.

CADENCE · MONTHLY · 25 MIN

Monthly investor updates die because writing them takes 2 hours and you keep postponing. This workflow gets you to a solid draft in 25 minutes. The key: don't try to remember what happened — grab the raw material from Slack, calendar, and metrics dashboard, then let LADLE structure it. You edit for voice and specificity, then send.

STEP 01

Structure the highlights

Goal: From raw notes, produce the standard 3-part update structure.

THE PROMPT

Here's what happened this month at my company [paste raw notes: wins, losses, hires, product ships, metrics]. Structure this into: (1) TL;DR (3 bullets max), (2) What went well, (3) What was hard, (4) Metrics vs plan, (5) Asks. Keep my voice; don't manufacture enthusiasm.

STEP 02

The 'what was hard' calibration

Goal: Make sure the hard section is honest without being scary.

THE PROMPT

Look at the 'What was hard' section from step 1. Is it honest? Or is it either (a) sugar-coating something material, or (b) making a normal challenge sound worse than it is? Suggest specific edits.

STEP 03

Final polish

Goal: Tighten voice, kill jargon, verify claims.

THE PROMPT

Final polish pass on the whole update. Do three things: (1) cut anything that sounds like investor-update-boilerplate, (2) flag any specific claim I should verify before sending, (3) suggest a subject line that's specific and not click-baity.

THE COMPOUNDING PART

Repeatability, not cleverness.

HANDOFFS

What lives where when the workflow finishes.

Save the final version in your investor-comms folder. Diff against last month's — if you're using the same phrases in the same order, next month's needs a structure refresh.

VARIATIONS

The same shape, different jobs.

  • Board version: same structure, but more governance-focused (add: KPIs vs plan, cash position, hiring pipeline detail).
  • Team version: same structure, internal audience (add: shout-outs section, cut the asks).
  • Advisor version: shorter (TL;DR + one ask), sent to specific advisors with specific questions.

Try this workflow once. Then decide if it earns a recurring slot.

The value compounds after the third run, not the first.
