WORKFLOW · RESEARCHER · WRITER · OPERATOR · 90 MIN

Reading synthesis (multi-article).

Turn 10-20 articles on a topic into a synthesis you actually understand. Three steps: individual takes, cross-cutting themes, your position.

CADENCE · PER TOPIC · 90 MIN

Reading a lot on a topic without synthesizing produces the illusion of knowledge — you remember what you read individually but couldn't defend a specific position. This workflow forces the third step (synthesis) that usually gets skipped.

STEP 01

Individual takes

Goal: One-line take per article, no more.

THE PROMPT

I've read [N] articles on [topic]. Paste their titles + your brief notes on each. Give me a one-line take per article — the specific claim or angle it argues. Not a summary; the point.

STEP 02

Cross-cutting themes

Goal: Group articles by claim; identify disagreements.

THE PROMPT

Group the articles by the position they take on the topic. Where are they in agreement? Where do they disagree? For the disagreements: is it about facts, interpretation, or values?

STEP 03

Your position

Goal: Draft your own position + strongest counter-argument.

THE PROMPT

Given the takes + themes: what's YOUR position on this topic now? Draft it in 2-3 sentences. Then draft the strongest counter-argument to your position. Include the specific evidence that would change your mind.

THE COMPOUNDING PART

Repeatability, not cleverness.

HANDOFFS

What lives where when the workflow finishes.

Save the synthesis. When you write about the topic, reference this doc so you don't argue past your prior thinking.

VARIATIONS

The same shape, different jobs.

  • Academic version: same structure but formalize step 1 as annotated bibliography and step 3 as thesis statement.
  • Contested-topic version: add step 2.5 — steel-man each disagreement position, one paragraph each, before landing your own.

Try this workflow once. Then decide if it earns a recurring slot.

The value compounds after the third run, not the first.
