Reference letter draft.

Write a strong reference letter in 25 minutes without generic language. Three steps: specific memory, structured letter, honest calibration.

CADENCE · PER REQUEST · 25 MIN

Reference letters die from genericness. 'Was hardworking, a team player, would recommend' means nothing. The strongest letters are specific — a particular moment, a specific quality, an example that couldn't be about anyone else. This workflow forces that specificity.

STEP 01

One specific memory

Goal: One specific incident that shows who this person is.

THE PROMPT

Writing a reference letter for [name] applying for [role/opportunity]. Before drafting anything, describe one specific memory of working with them — a moment where they demonstrated a quality that matters. Not a summary of their character; a specific incident with details.

STEP 02

Structured letter

Goal: Reference letter built around the specific memory.

THE PROMPT

Draft the reference letter. Structure: (1) your context (how you know them + how long), (2) the specific memory from step 1 as the anchor, (3) two more qualities each backed with one specific example, (4) honest calibration (see step 3 next), (5) direct endorsement. 400-600 words.

STEP 03

Honest calibration

Goal: One honest limitation that makes the recommendation stronger.

THE PROMPT

Add one honest limitation to the letter — something the person is genuinely working on or where they've been less strong. Frame it as 'here's where they'll grow' rather than a criticism. Paradoxically this makes the endorsement more credible.

THE COMPOUNDING PART

Repeatability, not cleverness.

HANDOFFS

What lives where when the workflow finishes.

Send the draft to the person you're recommending so they can flag anything they'd rather you not include. Also lets them see what you'll say — useful for interview prep on their side.

VARIATIONS

The same shape, different jobs.

  • Grad school recommendation: add a paragraph on intellectual disposition + potential; longer overall (600-800 words).
  • Professional promotion recommendation: same structure but frame around 'ready for the next level' with specific evidence.

Try this workflow once. Then decide if it earns a recurring slot.

The value compounds after the third run, not the first.
