Content calendar → publishable month.

The workflow for filling a monthly content pipeline with pieces that are actually differentiated. 90 minutes end-to-end for 12-16 pieces.

CADENCE · MONTHLY · FIRST WORKING DAY

Most content calendars are built once, published sporadically, and abandoned by week three. The failure mode is trying to plan too much detail upfront (planning fatigue) or too little (Wednesday morning: 'what am I writing about?'). This workflow lands in the middle — pick one strategic theme, generate 12-16 candidate angles, choose the ~8 you'll actually make, and draft the first pieces so the month starts with momentum instead of a blank page.

STEP 01

Pick one strategic theme for the month

Goal: Every piece this month builds toward one specific business or brand outcome, not a spread of unrelated topics.

THE PROMPT

I'm planning next month's content. The business objective is [X — e.g., positioning us as the honest AI subscription, driving trials from mid-market ops teams, etc.]. Given my past content [I'll paste last 3 months' titles], recommend one strategic theme for the coming month that: (a) advances the objective, (b) doesn't repeat what I've already published, (c) creates a coherent narrative someone reading the whole month would notice.

EXPECTED OUTPUT · REPRESENTATIVE
Objective: positioning us as the honest AI subscription. Past titles pasted.

STEP 02

Generate 12-16 angles

Goal: Every piece has a specific target reader, a specific insight, and a specific length.

THE PROMPT

Under the theme '[from step 1]', generate 12-16 content angles for the month. For each: title (specific, not clever), target reader (concrete — e.g., 'ops manager evaluating tools'), core insight (one sentence — what would surprise the reader), length target (short: 400-600 words, medium: 800-1200, long: 1800-2500). Distribution: ~8 short, 4-6 medium, 1-2 long.

EXPECTED OUTPUT · REPRESENTATIVE
Generate the angles.

STEP 03

Cut to the ~8 you'll actually publish

Goal: Realistic scope, not a wishlist. Fewer well-executed pieces beat many mediocre ones.

THE PROMPT

From the 12-16 angles above, cut to the 8 that: (a) are the freshest (not adjacent to something I've published recently), (b) have the strongest single insight, (c) are the ones I'd read if I saw the title in someone else's newsletter. Justify each cut and each keep.

EXPECTED OUTPUT · REPRESENTATIVE
Cut and justify.

STEP 04

Draft the first two pieces immediately

Goal: Start the month with published work, not a to-do list.

THE PROMPT

Draft the first two pieces above in full. Voice: dry, specific, no adjectives. First-person plural where about LADLE, third-person specific-example where about competitors. Include a specific number, quote, or example in each piece — no vague 'many companies' claims.

EXPECTED OUTPUT · REPRESENTATIVE
Draft pieces 1 and 2.

Handoff: Pieces 1 and 2 go into your CMS as scheduled drafts for Week 1 Monday and Thursday. Remaining 6 sit as titles + insights in your content calendar. Draft the next two on the Friday of Week 1 for Week 2; keep the two-week rolling draft window so the calendar is never fully speculative.

THE COMPOUNDING PART

Repeatability, not cleverness.

HANDOFFS

What lives where when the workflow finishes.

Calendar → your team's shared doc or Notion. Drafts → CMS as scheduled unpublished. The workflow re-runs the first working day of each month; do not skip the ruthless cut in Step 3 or the calendar becomes wishful and you don't ship.

VARIATIONS

The same shape, different jobs.

  • Social-only variation — Step 2 generates 30 posts across LinkedIn/X instead of 8 blog pieces; Step 4 drafts a week's worth.
  • Newsletter variation — Step 2 generates 4 issues (one per week), each with 3 sub-topics; Step 4 drafts issue 1 fully.
  • Video-first variation — angles become YouTube script outlines; Step 4 drafts scripts for the first two videos with rough cut/frame notes.
  • SEO-driven variation — Step 2 seeds angles from keyword research; theme is a semantic cluster around one intent, not a topic.

Try this workflow once. Then decide if it earns a recurring slot.

The value compounds after the third run, not the first.
