WORKFLOW · OPERATOR · 90 MIN

Home renovation decision matrix.

Turn a big-picture home renovation dream into a specific, scoped, sequenced plan. Three steps: constraint, priority, sequence.

CADENCE · PER PROJECT · 90 MIN

Home renovation projects grow past budget because the sequence of decisions is wrong — designing before setting the budget, choosing materials before knowing the scope. This workflow forces the sequence: constraint, priority, sequence. Do it in order; ignore later steps in earlier ones.

STEP 01

Constraints (before dreaming)

Goal: The hard constraints — budget, timeline, disruption tolerance.

THE PROMPT

Home renovation planning. Property: [type, age, location]. Total budget: [range]. Timeline: [when it starts, when it must be done]. Disruption tolerance: [how much of the house can be unusable at once]. Non-negotiables: [structural must-haves]. Structure these into a clear constraint set.

EXPECTED OUTPUT · REPRESENTATIVE
3-bed ranch, 1970s. Budget $80-100K. Want done in 5 months. Can't be without kitchen for more than 2 weeks.

STEP 02

Priority (rank the rooms)

Goal: Rank rooms/projects by ROI to daily life + property value.

THE PROMPT

Rank each candidate project by two axes: (1) how much it improves daily life, (2) how much it improves property value on resale. Rate each 1-5. Total the scores; higher = higher priority.

EXPECTED OUTPUT · REPRESENTATIVE
Candidate projects: kitchen refresh, primary bath refresh, add half-bath, backyard landscape.

STEP 03

Sequence (5-month plan)

Goal: 5-month schedule that respects budget + disruption constraints.

THE PROMPT

Given the priority matrix + constraints, produce a 5-month schedule. Include: sequence of projects, when each starts + ends, when disruption windows land (respecting 2-week kitchen constraint), decision milestones (when material selections lock).

THE COMPOUNDING PART

Repeatability, not cleverness.

HANDOFFS

What lives where when the workflow finishes.

Save the plan. Refer back weekly during the project. Any change to scope, budget, or timeline is a decision — write it down when it happens.

VARIATIONS

The same shape, different jobs.

  • Kitchen-only version: single-project deep-dive; 3 steps become materials, contractor selection, sequence.
  • New-construction version: same structure but longer horizons + more decisions (site selection, architect first, then contractor).

Try this workflow once. Then decide if it earns a recurring slot.

The value compounds after the third run, not the first.
