Claude (Anthropic)
$20/mo (Pro)Real strengths: Same underlying model family LADLE uses (Claude Sonnet). Best-in-class for long-form writing, careful reasoning, and long-context work. Anthropic ships Artifacts (side-by-side rendering of documents / code), Claude Code (CLI-native developer tool), and API access — none of which LADLE has yet.
When it beats LADLE: If you need Claude Opus specifically, or Artifacts, or Claude Code, or first-party API access — Anthropic is the correct answer. LADLE runs Sonnet only.
LADLE runs the same Sonnet model with a meal-donation baked into the same $20/mo price point. If you're already going to pay Anthropic, LADLE is a substitution; if you need Anthropic's product surface, stay on Claude.
Perplexity
Free · Pro $20/mo · Enterprise $40/mo/seatReal strengths: Search-first product with citations as a core feature (not an afterthought). Pro Search v3 chains multi-step research automatically. If your primary workflow is 'ask a question, get a well-sourced answer' — Perplexity built the interface around this specific job better than anyone.
When it beats LADLE: If your day is dominated by cited-search Q&A rather than conversation, coding, or file work — Perplexity is more purpose-fit than LADLE (which offers cited search, but as one feature among many).
LADLE's cited search is capable but not the product's centerpiece. See /switch/from-perplexity for a migration walkthrough.
Gemini (Google)
Free · Google AI Pro $20/moReal strengths: Deep integration with Google Workspace — Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Drive. If Google is your work OS, Gemini's in-doc suggestions and inbox-aware assistance are meaningfully better than any external tab. Also: Deep Research mode for long-form output.
When it beats LADLE: If you live inside Google Workspace and want AI where your work already happens — Gemini's integration is a real competitive moat LADLE doesn't cross.
LADLE is a browser tab, not a Workspace integration. If your workflow is 60%+ in Google apps, Gemini wins for convenience.
Mistral · Le Chat
Free · Pro $14.99/moReal strengths: European model provider with EU-hosted infrastructure — genuinely relevant for GDPR-strict organizations that want data residency in the EU. Fast at their price point. Open-weights models available for self-hosting.
When it beats LADLE: If EU-only data residency is a hard compliance requirement, or you want the option to self-host, LADLE cannot match. See /legal/dpa on our current EU stance.
LADLE doesn't offer EU data residency today; if that's blocking, Mistral is a better fit.
LADLE
$20/moReal strengths: Same $20 price point as the others, powered by Claude Sonnet. $8 of every subscription funds ten meals a month through the World Food Programme, with a public monthly receipt. Not a philanthropic angle bolted onto marketing — a structural line in the P&L.
